My daughter and I were looking for desserts to make and saw this recipe on Pinterest, I think. Â I love the ganache added to the donut. Â It really takes the donut over the top. Â It makes these chocolate glazed donuts a dessert. Â By I assume you have often wondered as IÂ do, is a donut a breakfast or a dessert? Â So I went searching for answers – I googled it. Â I could not seem to find an answer but what I did find is that I think the actual spelling should be doughnut. Â It is after all fried dough. Â It does not have to be fried though and I like to bake them to make them healthier.
INGREDIENTS (adapted from Buns in my Oven):
For the donuts:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg
6 tablespoons sour cream
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil
For the glaze:
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
6 tablespoons whole milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
DIRECTIONS:
To make the donuts:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, chocolate chips, and baking soda.
In a separate bowl, beat together the vanilla, egg, sour cream, milk, and oil. Â Stir the wet ingredients into the dry until just combined.
Spoon in a donut pan greased with spray.  Bake for 8 minutes or until the tops spring back when you touch them.
Let the donuts cool in the pan before glazing.
To make the glaze:
In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the sugar, milk, and vanilla until well combined. Â Remove from the heat. Â Dunk the donuts in the glaze to fully coat and place on a wire rack to set.
Chocolate Ganache:
Ingredients
8 ounces good semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon instant coffee granules
Directions
Heat the cream in a heavy sauce pan.  Combine the chocolate chips and instant coffee to the warm milk and stir until fully incorporated.Â
Finish making the dounts by dipping the donuts in the ganache. Â
Return to the wire rack and let set. Â
Serve and enjoy!

Yes, breakfast without the ganache and dessert ‘with’. I like to make baked doughnuts so I don’t feel guilty if I eat more than one. Thanks for sharing your recipe with Foodie Friends Friday party this week. I’ve pinned and shared.

It’s funny you mentioned donut vs. doughnut because anytime I write that word I always fumble with which word I should use. I like your explanation so I’m choosing sides and going with doughnuts.
Great looking doughnuts – even just with the glaze – but I do think the Ganache takes them to a whole new level of goodness.
Cheers and have a great week.

Cheers Trevor. I often wonder these deep thoughts. Our language is so funny. Yes the donuts were good without the ganache but why not add the ganache?
