I love a good sandwich. Most often, my sandwiches are made from last night’s leftovers. This Italian Hoagie Sandwich was a result from stopping at the deli department of my local grocery store. When I go this route, I really like to buy a few different meats to put in the sandwich. I want the different flavors from each of the meats. This sandwich combined roast beef, corned beef and Italian hard salami.
In doing some research, the hoagie has a lot of names. The hoagie owes its origins to Philadelphia. If this sandwich were made in New Orleans it would be a Poor Boy. If it was made across the Deleware, it would be called a submarine (sub) sandwich. If it were made in New York, it would be a Hero. The simple story on the history is that an Italian couple operating a grocery store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania were a few doors down from a pool hall. The patrons of the pool hall asked for some sandwiches. The couple asked what they wanted and the answer came back whatever you got. So the couple put together sandwiches with what they had on hand.
As my regular readers know, I love to do few things on my sandwiches. First, I always like to heat them up and melt cheese on them. I love the creamy gooeyness the cheese provides. I also like to put some sort of dressing – usually, a spicy one. I also love to play with temperatures as well. To add to the Italian style of this hoagie, I created a simple cabbage slaw with Italian seasonings and olive oil. It added the perfect zest and crunch to this sandwich.
The cabbage slaw ingredients and mixed in the bowl.
The final Italian Hoagie Sandwich plated.
- 2 slices of cabbage
- 1 slice of a yellow onion
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasonings
- 2 teaspoons smoked Mediterranean sea salt
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 2 teaspoons sriracha
- 1 Hoagie bun
- 3 slices roast beef
- 3 slices corned beef
- 4 slices Italian hard salami
- 2 slices provolone cheese
- Combine the slaw ingredients, mix well and set aside.
- Combine the mayo and sriracha and set aside.
- Assemble the sandwich by starting with adding the dressing.
- Next add the roast beef, corned beef and finish with the hard salami.
- Next, add the cheese and place in a 325 degree oven for 2 minutes (until the cheese melts).
- Top with as much of the slaw as you like.
- Serve and enjoy!
